Unconditional Love - Part 4

It had been two months since the NDP and both Cathy and Pierre had been seeing each other since then. They had a great time together and were enjoying every minute of it. They would try to meet up after school and would spend their weekends engaging in each other activities. She would follow him to his kayaking training while he would accompany her on her dance practice. They also got to know each other friends and would even go out on group dating with them. It seemed then that everything was progressing smoothly towards a happy ending. However, the sweetness in their honeymoon began to dilute when Pierre’s true colours started to show as they became more intimate.

Cathy realised that Pierre was becoming more possessive and at times, unreasonable. In fact, he had listed some conditions that he expected her to adhere to. Feeling threatened by her close relationship with her pals, he forbade her from going out with her ‘brothers’ in his absence and discouraged her from meeting her ‘sisters’ too often lest she should be misguided by them. But most importantly, he confessed that he had lost too many ‘love battles’ and wouldn’t want to lose Cathy to her beloved friends. He wanted Cathy to spend all her available waking time with him. Though it sounded absurd and selfish, Cathy agreed to it. She was so flattered to be so ‘wanted’ that she felt that it was an understandable request. She reasoned that she too would feel unwanted if he was to spend more time with his buddies than with her.

But as it turned out, she found it impossible to neglect her friends who had been there for her all these years. Though her friends understood her need to spend more time with Pierre and wouldn’t insist on her joining them for their usual get-togethers, Cathy didn’t see it as being fair to them. Anyway, she couldn’t stand being isolated from them either. As such, she would always end up arguing with Pierre when she had to lie to hang out with her friends. Although Pierre would eventually give in, he would make her promise not to deceive him again. However, being the gregarious being she was, Cathy would break her promise in no time.

Once, Pierre who had his supplementary called off at the eleventh hour, decided to pay Cathy a surprise visit at her school where she would be having her choir practice. He had memorised her schedule and knew that her practice would be over by five. Sitting on the stone chair at the void deck facing the school gate, he waited patiently for his 'Dear' to emerge. 5.15pm came and she didn’t appear. Then came 5.30pm and she was still nowhere to be seen. Knowing well that she wouldn’t have her handphone by her side during practice, he decided to call her school to find out what was causing the delay. Imagined the shock he received when the school clerk told him that there was no choir practice as the teacher-in-charge was overseas. In fact, it had been suspended for the past two weeks. Unable to understand why Cathy hadn’t informed him of the suspension, his imagination began to run wild. He called her handphone to try to locate her but she failed to answer his call. Just as he was wondering what he should do next, he spotted her from afar walking towards her school. And she wasn’t alone.
